This Summer Treat Will Make You Go Coconuts For A Bowl Of Soft Serve

No summer is complete without a bevy of Instagrammable treats, and Chloe's Soft Serve Fruit Co. coconut bowls are here to deliver the “likes” — and, of course, something sweet.

“Coconuts are a fun, delicious super fruit that also happen to look amazing carrying our Soft Serve Fruit,” the company's founder, Chloe Epstein, tells Elite Daily.

Chloe's — located at East 17 Street in New York City — has certainly created a swoon-worthy snack thanks to the combination of fruit, colorful (and healthy) soft serve, and adorable drink umbrellas.

The bowls debuted on Wednesday, July 19 and look almost too beautiful to eat. However, Epstein tells Elite Daily her food isn't just about the appearance and snaps.

“We don't necessarily look at trends when it comes to our menu,” she says. “Instead we strive to create ‘better for you,' delicious-tasting snacks that we think transcend what is hot right now to what we think our consumers simply will enjoy.”

And the coconut is certainly having a moment.

Courtesy of Chloe's Soft Serve Fruit Co.

Whether it's working its way into your post-workout snacks or seeping its way into beauty routines, coconuts have caused a craze.

Fortunately, Epstein and her team caught on. Though they only planned to have coconut bowls for an in-store summer kickoff event, they toyed with the idea of making something bigger out of the new dessert.

“Our campaign is called #SweetestSummerEver and we felt the coconut presentation was the perfect way to celebrate summer,” Epstein says.

Now available until Sept. 22, the coconut bowls are ready to be consumed, but they're on a first-come, first-serve basis, so you're not going to want to miss out.

With a mixture of fruit, water, and a touch of organic cane sugar, Chloe's not only offers a fun-looking item, but a healthy one.

“We wanted to offer something fun, festive, and fruity that complimented our delicious, guilt-free Soft Serve Fruit,” Epstein says of the dessert. “We love to get creative with how we pair and present it.”

No need to convince us, we're on our way!

For those who are not based in New York, have a look at ChloesFruit.com to find out where you can get a sweet, healthy fix.

Chipotle Is Reportedly Having Another Norovirus Problem In This Location — UPDATE

After multiple customers reported norovirus-like symptoms, Chipotle has closed one of its Virginia restaurants.

UPDATE: Chipotle founder and CEO Steve Ells said in a statement obtained by Elite Daily,

Our Sterling, VA restaurant has reopened for business today.

The safety and well-being of our customers is always our top priority. The event that occurred at this restaurant is consistent with Norovirus which can be introduced by people into any closed environment like schools, cruise ships, nursing homes or restaurants. It is unfortunate that anyone became ill after visiting our restaurant, and when we learned of this issue, we took aggressive action to correct the problem and protect our customers. We quickly and proactively notified local health officials, deployed our safety support teams, and voluntarily closed the restaurant. While the restaurant was closed, multiple teams performed complete sanitizations of all surfaces. We also provided support to any customers or employees who had reported illness to ensure their well-being.

We made a commitment to be industry leaders in food safety and we have made tremendous progress since starting on that journey. We took a number of steps to help us achieve that goal, including:

  • The hiring of Dr. Jim Marsden, an industry leader in food safety, to oversee all aspects of our food safety program
  • The implementation of a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) food safety system in all of our restaurants
  • The implementation of a third-party food safety auditing system
  • The implementation of validated interventions for all of our critical suppliers
  • The implementation of additional food handling and preparation procedures
  • Required food safety certification for all of our managers
  • The ongoing installation of advanced ventilation purification systems
  • The implementation of a rapid deployment team including food safety experts and nurses
  • The creation a food safety advisory council comprised of the nation's leading food safety experts.

In the rare case that an event does occur these systems and the associated processes are designed to provide very fast detection and rigorous procedures to quickly remedy the situation.

We believe these advancements, among others, have put us on the path to industry leadership while we continually strive to find new and innovative ways to ensure that our restaurants are safe. We are reopening our Sterling restaurant today confident in the steps we have taken. We know that maintaining the highest level of safety in all of our restaurants is incumbent upon us. I made a commitment on behalf of Chipotle to make our restaurants the safest place to eat, and I am confident in the programs and procedures we have implemented.

EARLIER: According to Business Insider, eight reports were made about Chipotle's Sterling, Virginia location on the iwaspoisoned.com website that promises “safer dining by crowdsourcing.”

At least 13 people claimed to be sick with a stomach bug after eating there between Friday, July 14, and Saturday, July 15, according to the site.

Their symptoms included those commonly associated with a stomach bug — dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, etc.

One person has reportedly even been hospitalized twice as a result.

Chipotle's executive director of food safety, Jim Mardsen, said in a statement to Business Insider, “We are working with health authorities to understand what the cause may be and to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”

Elite Daily reached out to Chipotle for comment but did not hear back at time of publication.

He also made it clear that this is most likely an isolated incident and has nothing to do with the chain's overall food supply.

“It is safe to eat a Chipotle,” he said, reassuring burrito fans they needn't look elsewhere for their extra guacamole fix.

This isn't the first time Chipotle has been at the center of food safety concerns.

In 2016, they experienced a high-profile E.Coli outbreak that forced all U.S. stores to close briefly to “to discuss recent and future food safety changes.” A criminal investigation was opened related to a norovirus outbreak in August 2015 at a store in Simi Valley, California. Chipotle cooperated with that investigation, and in February 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the E. coli outbreaks were over.

Thankfully, this most recent incident appears to be isolated.

In more appetizing news, Chipotle has a few new menu items we can all look forward to.

The company is reportedly testing a queso dip in their New York City test kitchen, NEXT Kitchen. According Eater, CEO Steve Ells sent an internal memo saying the dip wouldn't contain added colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Likewise, Chipotle has also been testing dessert in the form of sugary-sweet buñuelos made by frying tortillas and drizzling them with honey, sugar, and cinnamon.

Sounds delicious to me!

Some Geniuses Created Rosé-Flavored Jelly For Your Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Like its similar, equally trendy color millennial pink, rosé keeps evolving. There's pink wine-flavored gummy bears, ice cream, and now, jelly.

It's like peanut butter jelly time meets happy hour, and we have Studio City, California-based Etsy shop Drunk Jelly to thank for the genius creation.

Drunk Jelly's non-alcoholic Rosé Wine Jelly — their number one seller — is one of seven innovative, vino-inspired jelly flavors.

Etsy

The others include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Moscato, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Considering Rosé's pale pink hue is so different from your average Concord Grape stuff, one schmear is practically guaranteed to elevate your PB&J game to Instagram-worthy new heights.

But don't be fooled: This jelly is way more than just a pretty pantry addition.

It actually tastes great, too.

Etsy

In their Etsy product description, the folks at DRUNKJELLY say it “has flavors of cherry, watermelon and a hint of lime.”

Is it weird to drool over jelly?

People who've already purchased the genius product can't get enough of it. “I LOVE IT!!” one reviewer, who gave it five stars, wrote. “I finally got to try it last night and it was amazing!”

Imagine picnicking with a fabulous assortment of charcuterie, crackers, this jelly, and maybe even a rosé 40. That would be out of this world.

Ready to rosé all the way to your online shopping cart?

You can pick up a 4-ounce jar of Drunk Jelly Rosé Wine Jelly on Etsy for $6. Or, if you'd rather go big, an 8-ounce jar is available for $9.

Also, if you want to try out all the flavors, their full set of seven 4-ounce jars is available for just $35.

I hate to break it to regular jelly, but I don't think I can ever go back to my standard strawberry and grape faves.

Peanut butter deserves to live the luxe life with rosé, too.

Totino's Mac ‘N' Cheese Pizza Rolls Will Bring Midnight Snacking To A New Level

You guys, Totino's has really outdone itself with its newest, extra cheesy pizza rolls flavor: Macaroni and Cheese with Bacon.

That's right, the geniuses at Totino's have actually combined two of my favorite meals — mac ‘n' cheese and pizza — into the bite-sized rolls I've been enjoying since the '90s.

totino's mac and cheese pizza rolls package

Totino's

Before we get too excited, this savory new flavor is not exactly in stores… yet. Thrillist reports the first round of shipments went out the week of July 17, but they won't be available everywhere until October.

So basically, it's time to stalk your freezer aisle. As soon as you catch a glimpse of everyone's favorite cheesy pasta next to all the other pizza roll flavors, grab a box.

A company spokesperson told Thrillist that Macaroni and Cheese with Bacon is its first new flavor since releasing the limited edition Cheeseburger in 2016.

This is a momentous occasion!

The company's latest announcement comes on the heels of Pizza Hut's equally impressive Mac ‘N' Cheese Pizza, which is an entire pie covered in the cheesy stuff.

Unlike Totino's bacon-packed flavor, Pizza Hut UK's giant version is available in a regular option (“The Cheesy One”) and a barbecue option (“The BBQ One”).

In a July 10 press release, the famed pizza brand called it one of their best creations yet (and I have to agree). They said,

We don't mean to brag — but at Pizza Hut towers, we think it's literally the best pizza we've ever made ever. Like… EVER.

In this instance, it's totally okay to brag.

Totino's should do the same, honestly.

Even though I've come a long way since my days of microwaving pizza rolls (and always burning my mouth with their super hot filling) on the reg, come October, I'll definitely be renewing my obsession.

Because macaroni and cheese is the best, everyone. It just is.

Dark Chocolate Twix Bars Are Finally A Thing And Chocolate Lovers Are Rejoicing

If you love biting into that timeless chocolate and caramel-covered crunchy shortbread cookie, you're going to love Twix's brand's new dark chocolate bar.

The new candy bar — called Twix Dark — features the same tasty concept with an even richer flavor, all thanks to a higher cacao percentage in the chocolate.

According to a press release from Mars — the company behind Twix and the rest of America's best chocolate bars — Twix Dark is already “making its way into stores across the country.”

A Twix Dark on a purple gradient background

Consider this your cue to freak out, chocolate fans, because the candy aisle is forever changed… in the best way possible.

Real talk though, the new Twix Dark packaging alone is bold enough to send me into an Amazon-ordering frenzy. (Like, for $31, should I get one or two 36-count boxes?)

Flavor-wise, I personally dig dark chocolate more than the milky stuff.

When Mars Chocolate launched a dark version of the Milky Way (Milky Way Midnight), I couldn't believe how much better it tasted than the original.

Hopefully the in-demand Twix upgrade will wow me in the same way.

And if it doesn't, Mars is also permanently re-releasing two old favorites: Twix Peanut Butter and Twix White.

Twix Peanut Butter, which is smothered with PB instead of caramel beneath a layer of milk chocolate, will be available again in September. I bet the fan favorite will go nicely with a little Rosé Wine Jelly.

Likewise, Twix White, a previously limited edition seasonal flavor, is returning just in time for the holidays in November.

Twix Brand Director Allison Miazga-Bedrick explained the expanded range in a statement. She said,

The dark chocolate, peanut butter and white chocolate categories are some of the largest and fastest growing partitions in our industry. We not only wanted to give Twix fans more flavor options to choose from, but all chocolate lovers more ways to enjoy our product.

What do you think, chocolate lovers? Are you ready to compare all four Twix flavors?

Genius Restaurant Offers “Instagram Kits” To Make Your Food Extra ‘Grammable

Raise your hand if your #foodporn and #nomnom shots have suffered from poor restaurant lighting.

I get it, restaurants want the ambiance to be moody as you chow down on their fancy recipes, but that creates a challenge for those of us who enjoy documenting our every meal on Instagram — for maximum likes.

One Soho, London, hot spot understands the social media struggle, and offers “Instagram Kits” to help their dishes look desirable on the ‘gram.

That's right: Dirty Bones, which specializes in “New York comfort food and cocktails,” is now offering its customers free “Instagram Kits” so they can achieve the perfect snapshot.

It's a brilliant idea.

My fellow foodies, you needn't awkwardly borrow your friend's iPhone flashlight while at Dirty Bones, because they have you covered.

According to Mashable, the “Instagram Kit” comes with everything you need for a hi-res table-side shot, including a portable LED light, a multi-device charger, a clip-on wide angle camera, and a tripod selfie stick.

From close-up shots of melty cheese to overhead shots of the full spread (and of course, a few selfies with your crew), you can literally feed every aspect of your social media addiction with a kit like this.

The best part is — thanks to that multi-device charger — you won't drain your entire phone battery before the food arrives!

A spokesperson for Dirty Bones released a statement to Mashable about the incredible, business-savvy idea. They said,

People love to share what they're eating on social media, so we wanted to put together something that made it easier to get that perfect shot regardless of the lighting or time of day.

More and more people are also using Instagram to help them decide where to eat, so as a restaurant group it's key for us to make sure that people are getting the best possible shots of all our dishes and drinks.

They. Get. It.

So, how do we make this a standard thing at all restaurants?

These Cookie Dough Ice Cream Bowls Will Make Your Scoop So Much Sweeter

I recently went to Stew Leonard's for the first time. It's a quirky grocery store headquartered in Connecticut with all kinds of premium food options.

Browsing through the stocked aisles is a similar experience to that of your average Whole Foods — if Whole Foods had mechanical stuffed animals doing tricks on uneven bars above the produce.

However, since my inaugural trip to Stew Leonard's, aka “The World's Largest Dairy Store,” the grocer has started selling a yummy-looking concoction: cookie dough ice cream bowls.

And, no, I'm not talking about a scoop or two of your average chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream in a bowl.

This is literally a heaping mound of Stew Leonard's original Edible Cookie Dough topped with soft serve.

To give you an idea, here's a pristine shot of one IRL, courtesy of foodie Instagram account Noshing USA.

While they opted for the swirls of (presumably) chocolate soft serve, you can forego the ice cream entirely…  if you want.

Stew Leonard's takes their Edible Cookie Dough seriously and serves it up like ice cream by the scoop in either bowls or cones.

(Did I mention they have ice cream stands inside their stores? It's like a damn carnival in there.)

You can snag a single scoop of dough for $3.99 or a double for $6.99. Not a high price to pay for a de-stressing trip to #nomnom heaven while you pick up a few things for your pantry.

Stew Leonard's calls the summery dessert “a tasty and safe treat for kids of all ages” on their website.

In 2016, the FDA warned against eating raw cookie dough, because, unlike Stew Leonard's recipe — which is made with pasteurized eggs and heat-treated flour — the other stuff is made using uncooked flour and eggs, which can potentially make you really sick.

At Stew's, all you need to worry about is whether to order one scoop or two!

McDonald's does just about anything in its power to make customers happy — and now, they're giving lucky customers free McDonald's merch.

Before this generous surprise, the fast food company released their secret Big Mac Sauce to the public. Then, they started their coveted McDelivery service with UberEATS. Now, Mickey D's is releasing a line of McDonald's clothing and accessories.

Needless to say, we're lovin' it.

mcdonald's themed merch

As if the Golden Arches don't already have us sprung on their delicious Big Macs and equally as tasty fries, the McDelivery collection is here to celebrate the already popular McDelivery service — which was created in conjunction with UberEats — going global on July 26.

I mean, honestly, what would drunken nights be without McDelivery? Now, it'll be available in select locations all over the world — and hungry snackers will be pleased.

So, what items can you expect to see in the McDelivery collection?

You'll find a “World Famous” tracksuit…

OK, this tracksuit is really simple and looks really comfortable. I can see myself in this.

A pair of “World Famous” slides to go with your tracksuit…

Forget about the Fenty slides that kept you up at night. You'd be a lot comfier in these “World Famous” slides.

A Big Mac onesie…

I know you want this. Don't lie.

A Big Mac pillow case set…

Try not to drool all over these.

And a delicious picnic blanket.

You can get your hands on these items on July 26 at participating locations for a very limited time (one day, to be exact). The best part about it is the merch is free with any McDelivery order via UberEATS while supplies last.

There's no word on whether these items will be available for purchase further down the line, but if you miss getting your free merch this time around, you might have another opportunity to snag your swag during another “fun McDonald's moment.”

In the meantime, I'll just mark my calendar for July 26 and hope that I'm lucky enough to snag some McDonald's-themed merch. I can already see myself rocking my Big Mac onesie everywhere.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so it comes as no surprise it's receiving the unicorn treatment.

That's right: Unicorn Froot Loops have officially hit the shelves, and it's the cereal that'll take you back to your elementary school days when you were all about those neon-colored Lisa Frank notebooks. Your inner 7-year-old will be pleased to know you're beginning the day with a bowl of these babies.

The Instagram account candyhunting — a noble cause if I ever did see one — shared the news of the cereal's release, and it's hard not to love this magical news.

Kellogg's does know the way to its customers' hearts, but unfortunately, this enchanted limited-time treat is  only available in Germany at this time.

However, if you're in Germany, it still might be hard to get a box. Unicorn Froot Loops are already sold out at Flake's Corner Cafe. Deep breaths,  magical, mystical readers — deep breaths. Your frustration is understandable.

If you're sticking with eggs whites or bagels while patiently waiting for the cereal's U.S. release, there are plenty of other ways to satisfy your rainbow cravings, so hang tight.

If you find yourself in New York City, make Italians proud with a stop at Gelso & Grand for the unicorn cannoli that comes equipped with funfetti cake, homemade buttercream,  lavander macaroons, graham crackers, and colorful sprinkles.

Oh, one more thing: The “unicornoli” is covered in  a dusting of 24-karat gold on its shell, so it's kind of a big deal.

While in New York, head down to Fidi for a slice of Industry Kitchen's unicorn pizza.

Now that's amore, ladies and gents. Who could resist a bit of this fabulous treat?

There's more good news for those who can't make it to New York, either: Follow this recipe for the non-dairy unicorn milkshake and prepare to send your tastebuds on a journey that'll make Willy Wonka jealous.

Until those magical unicorns spread their wings and carry over boxes of those Froot Loops to the U.S., treat yourself to the next best thing.

Your move, Kellogg's.

Tequila-Infused Chocolate Exists And It'll Make Your Night Out So Much Sweeter

As if you needed another excuse to drink tequila, July 24 is National Tequila Day. And though the holiday is nearly done, that's no excuse to skip out on celebrating the smooth, woodsy Mexican spirit. But if you're not a fan of shooting it with lime and salt, Sugarfina has come to your rescue with a spicy tequila-infused chocolate bar, so you can have your tequila and eat it, too.

Part of Sugarfina's ongoing collaboration with George Clooney-owned premium tequila company Casamigos, the bar is “made with rich dark chocolate, a splash of Casamigos Añejo Tequila, spicy chipotle chilies and smoked sea salt.” It sounds like the perfect mix of sweet, salty, and spicy — especially with Casamigos's golden, smoothy, woodsy añejo, which is aged for 14 months in whiskey barrels.

Just imagine: you're at the bar with friends, and they all scream for a round of tequila shots. You, a genius, have packed a bar of Sugarfina's tequila chocolate. Your friends, fools, have not.

So while they're licking salt off of their dirty hands and sucking on limes that may or may not have been washed, you're going to be enjoying the heat and richness of chocolate on your tongue while the fire of a nice tequila swirls around in your mouth.

Your friends will be begging you to tell them where you got your chocolate, but you don't have to tell them.

Unless they offer to buy you a shot.

Then you can tell them that they can buy their own tequila-infused candy on Sugarfina's website — along with a bunch of other infused candies. (Rosé gummies, anyone?)

No matter which way you spin it — whether on a night out with friends or just because you like chocolate and tequila — Sugarfina and Casamigos's chocolate bar will make your days and nights sweeter, no bottle needed.

Much Needed Technology Examines Food Pics And Gives You Ingredients And Recipes

Snapping food pics is about to get more useful than ever, thanks to a new artificially intelligent technology developed by researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). It's called Pic2Recipe, and the algorithm is able to give you a list of ingredients and recipe recommendations for each food shot you take. Can you imagine the chef-like possibilities?

Before you get your hopes up, we're only talking about the technology right now. It's not an app — yet.

To create the cool new system, CSAIL graduate student Nicholas Hynes and his team of researchers compiled data from popular recipe websites into one database called Recipe1M. It can then find common ingredients and suggest similar recipes from their very own database.

I'm no scientist, but this sounds life-changing in a world where food photography is at the forefront of our social media lives. I mean, a restaurant in England is even offering its customers “Instagram kits” to ensure their photos are perfectly lit and ready for the ‘gram.

Now, these researchers are saying we could potentially turn our photo libraries into a cookbook? Beautiful.

In an interview with Gizmodo, Hynes explained the complexities of trying to “teach” their system — it sounds like something straight out of Person of Interest — how to recognize different cooking methods (e.g. steaming versus frying).

He also thinks Pic2Recipe will help people become more familiar with what they're eating. He told Gizmodo,

This could potentially help people figure out what's in their food when they don't have explicit nutritional information. For example, if you know what ingredients went into a dish but not the amount, you can take a photo, enter the ingredients, and run the model to find a similar recipe with known quantities, and then use that information to approximate your own meal.

Yep, I need it.

There's no word on when Pic2Recipe will finally be an app. However, as soon as it hits the App Store, I will pay whatever amount necessary.

You can try the demo here.

Science Says These 11 Foods Can Reduce Stress, So Go Add Them To Your Grocery List

$

Comfort food pretty much does it all, from mending a broken heart, to nursing a period-induced sugar craving, and everything in between. Seriously, nothing feels better than providing your body with the nourishment it needs, and deserves. And oftentimes, those changes in your mood after a tasty snack aren't just in your head — many foods have been scientifically shown to reduce stress.

The key, however, is to know what you should and shouldn't be eating when you're looking for a little stress relief.

Nutritionist and founder of Pure Change Dr. Charles Passler tells Elite Daily processed foods, no matter how satisfying they are to munch on, won't make you feel better in the long run.

He explains,

Chemicals and processed foods stress the liver and high-carb foods stress the pancreas. Both situations force the body to work harder and can cause an increased production of the stress hormone cortisol.

High cortisol decreases cognitive function and energy. Eating healthy balanced snacks allows the hormones, energy, and cognition to remain stable.

Greasy french fries and a pint of Ben & Jerry's may sound like a great idea at the time, but delicious quick-fixes typically only yield short-term benefits.

Rather than over-indulging in sugar-loaded snacks that can actually make you feel pretty gross after the fact, opt for any one of these healthy alternatives to snack your stress away.

1. Warm Milk

Subtle Signs You're Under More Stress Than You Realize

Stress can often affect your sleeping pattern, so if you're struggling to get some shut-eye, you may want to consider drinking a warm glass of milk before bed.

The amino acid tryptophan in milk relaxes your body, allowing you to drift off to sleep more easily.

For a non-dairy alternative, golden mylk would also suffice.

2. Dark Chocolate

Kelly Spring, MS, RD, CDN, and owner of Kelly's Choice Nutrition Company, tells Elite Daily dark chocolate is a great stress-reliever, as it works to decrease cortisol levels and brighten your mood.

So the next time work has you worried, skip happy hour and get chocolate-wasted instead!

3. Avocado

How To Make "Green" Guacamole

Avocado is literally life and, it turns out, an edible stress-reliever.

This Insta-worthy toast-topper is loaded with glutathione, a natural substance that blocks intestinal absorption of harmful fats and vitamin E. Avocados also boast a generous serving of folate, which helps relax your entire body.

4. Black Tea

My mother has convinced me there's nothing a cup of tea can't solve.

And, if you don't believe my mom (ahem, how dare you), according to a study performed by University College London, participants who drank four cups of black tea every day for six weeks had lower levels of cortisol in their blood.

Pinkies up!

5. Berries

These summery fruits keep you cool, calm, and collected. Vitamin C combats stress, so you'll definitely want to top your oatmeal, smoothie bowls, salads, and yogurt with a handful (or two) of your favorite variety.

6. White Bean Dip

Lazy Girl's Guide To Eating Healthier

Nutrition Coach and Carrots ‘N' Cake blogger Tina Haupert says her go-to stress-buster is a bowl of her signature white bean dip, made with canned white beans, almond butter, honey, cinnamon, salt, and a dash of vanilla extract.

She tells Elite Daily,

The white beans and honey mix makes for a winning combination that provides plenty of nutrients and staying power from protein, fiber, and healthy fats that can lower stress levels.

The honey adds natural flavor to the spread, so you don't taste the beans at all!

7. Salmon

You don't typically see people casually snacking on salmon, but maybe it's high time someone starts the trend.

High in omega-3 fatty acids, once slice of salmon could be the difference between brain fog and salary bonus. Take a bite when you feel like you're lacking motivation, and you'll be well-equipped to deal with any stress that comes your way.

8. Nuts

Recognized by the FDA as an excellent food source to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, macadamia nuts are also a stress-relieving snack.

Spring recommends snacking on macadamia nuts from Royal Hawaiian Orchards, raving “they even have dark chocolate blueberry acai macadamia nuts for an even bigger stress-relieving punch!”

9. Greens

You don't have to wait for lunch or dinner to snack on produce.

Veggies like spinach, kale, chard, and broccoli are all loaded with folate which helps regulate your mood. So if you're feeling the emotional munchies, steam some greens and snack on, baby.

10. Coconut

I'll slice, dice, and put coconut on everything, but did you know just one whiff of the tropical fruit is enough to reduce stress levels?

According to a pilot study performed by Columbia University, those who breathed in a coconut scent after a challenging task saw their blood pressure regulate more quickly than those who did not.

My advice? Buy the coconut, cut it in half, and sniff the stress away.

11. Turmeric

How To Spice Up Your Ramen: Back To School Edition

OK technically you add the spice to food, but curcumin, the active compound found in turmeric, boosts DHA levels in the brain, in addition to helping your body maintain a healthy gut.

There's a reason turmeric is considered a superfood, friends.

The next time you're feeling  stressed to the point of mindless indulgence, do yourself (and your body) a favor by snacking smart.

You'll feel better, faster, and your body will thank you.

With countless studies to take into consideration, and trend and trend sweeping the internet, no one really knows how to lead the ideal healthy lifestyle. The truth is, you and I are winging it along with everyone else, but it's still important to get to the bottom of some of the most common health food myths floating around out there.

Log on to any health and wellness website and see for yourself. We're constantly being told what foods to eat, what foods to avoid, how to cook our meals, even the best times to eat them — but have you ever noticed how every article seems to contradict the one you just read?

In an interview with Elite Daily, HUM Nutrition head registered dietician Alex Caspero, MA, RD, CLT, RYT, weighs in to help us decipher fact from fiction when it comes to healthy living.

1. Sugar In Fruit Is Just As Bad As Sugar In Candy

When I initially decided to dive head-first into eating healthy, I did a ton of research on sugar substitutes, because this girl's sweet tooth is serious.

I naturally turned to fruit to curb my cravings, but I still wondered whether this alternative really was best for me and my body in the long run.

So, what's the truth? Caspero says,

In nature, sugar is coupled with fiber, an essential ingredient that changes the way we metabolize sugars.

The blood sugar response from eating an apple is much different from eating, say, a Jolly Rancher.

Additionally, the fiber helps feed gut bacteria, which can help improve immune response and regulate GI movement.

Of course, too much of anything is never suggested, so keep in mind the FDA suggests eating at least two servings of fruit per day.

2. You Should Eat Less Carbs

I used to be extremely wary of carbs, but they are actually an essential part of a well-balanced diet.

Caspero tells Elite Daily,

When we look at longevity studies, we find the longest-lived have diets of roughly 65 percent carbohydrates, mostly in the form of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits.

I try to encourage my clients to eat more plant-based, meaning more of their calories coming from whole forms of plant foods and less from refined and processed versions. This shift is usually not only better for calorie regulation, but also for reducing risk of chronic disease.

Translation: It's cool to carb-load just as long as you choose them wisely.

3. Raw Vegetables Are Better Than Cooked Vegetables

Personally, my stomach can't handle a plate full of raw vegetables, but I've heard straight from the ground is typically better for you.

Whether you opt to eat your veggies cooked or raw, Caspero says it's still a win either way:

If the only way you will eat broccoli is sautéed or steamed, have at it.

While it might have slightly less water-soluble nutrients than raw broccoli, it's such a small amount that it really doesn't matter in the larger picture.

4. Frozen Vegetables And Fruit Have Less Nutritional Value

Lazy Girl's Guide To Eating Healthier

Produce can be pricey, especially when you're craving foods that are out-of-season.

I personally buy a lot of vegetables frozen and in bulk because they last longer and, actually, can be healthier for you.

According to Caspero, vegetables are normally frozen at the peak of ripeness, while raw vegetables lose their nutrient content the longer you wait to eat them.

She does, however, suggest you keep a sharp eye on labels to ensure your produce isn't loaded with sneaky additives like sugar.

5. Juice Detoxes Are Good For You

Why You Need To Shut Up About Your Juice Cleanse

I was never part of the juice-cleansing craze, mostly because I'd rather just eat my food as it is than purée it.

While some wellness gurus stand by its potential digestive benefits, Caspero says backing off processed foods should do the trick naturally:

While some people report feeling better letting their digestive system ‘rest' for a day or two, there is no medical reason for this. Our GI tracts were designed to continuously work, without needing to take any time off.

Instead of expensive juice detoxes (which, juice itself does not ‘detox' the body), I recommend reducing processed grains/sugars/alcohol/animal proteins and adding in more fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains when you feel like you need a ‘reset.'

6. You Should Avoid Foods High In Fat

How To Make "Green" Guacamole

There's good fat, and then there's bad fat. According to Caspero, you should be implementing healthy fats, like nut butters, avocado, and olive oil into your daily diet.

For one, it's good for the body, but there's also the added bonus of keeping skin supple and hair shiny.

Again, balance is key, but there's no shame in the good fatty foods game.

7. You Should Eat Six Small Meals A Day Rather Than Three Big Meals

How To Make Delicious Canna Apple Roses

I know myself, and if I even try to limit myself to three large meals a day, I'll end up snacking regardless.

Caspero says when and how often you eat is all up to personal preference. The key is learning to identify when your body is truly hungry, regardless of what the clock says.

8. You Should Only Eat The Whites Of Eggs

Eggs are a controversial food item because overlapping studies can't seem to decide whether or not this animal product is really all that healthy.

However, Caspero notes most of an egg's nutrients exist in the yolk, like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for your eyes and choline, so don't bother tossing the yellow just to save on calories and fat.

9. All Organic Foods Are Healthier Than Non-Organic Foods

What Happens To Your Body When You Go Paleo

I can get behind the idea of organic, but unfortunately, these so-called better-for-you foods are significantly more expensive than the non-organic options.

For most of us, it comes down to budget, but what's the difference health-wise?

According to Caspero, organic foods don't claim to be healthier in a traditional sense. However, organic items do have more stringent standards of what pesticides are allowed to be sprayed on them, and how they are produced.

Snack on those facts!

9 Health Food Myths That Need To Be Debunked Once And For All

This Chipotle Is Adding A Drive-Thru Window And We're All So, So Jealous

Ohio-based burrito fans are in for a real treat. Chipotle is adding a drive-thru window at one of its Ohio locations, Today reports. The beloved burrito company is calling its new concept a “vehicular pickup window,” and it pretty much means that you can order your burrito with extra guac and never, ever leave your car.

There's no word on why only one lucky location is getting this amazing amenity, and hopefully more Chipotles will follow its lead. In the meantime, I might need to embark on a road trip just to test it out.

Alas, a vehicular pickup window isn't the first new thing Chipotle is trying. The fast casual restaurant is also testing out queso at its New York City test kitchen, NEXT Kitchen. The new queso is reportedly made without added colors, flavors, or preservatives. So that makes it sort of healthy, right?

According to Eater, Chipotle CEO Steve Ells said in an internal memo to employees that it was difficult to make a queso dip that lives up to the company's quality standards. However, Chipotle is trying to create the perfect one because “all of our competitors sell queso, and we know some customers don't come to Chipotle because we don't offer it.”

It's true. But the guac!

While I'm sincerely hoping that the new dip makes it to the regular menu, I'm also intrigued by the dessert Chipotle tested at NEXT Kitchen earlier this year: Mexican buñuelos (well, Chipotle-style ones). These were fried tortillas drizzled with honey, sugar, and cinnamon.

They sure know how to keep us burrito lovers on our toes!

And to think, diners at that one #blessed Ohio location will soon be able to drive through the vehicular pickup window and grab a full-on feast without having to find a parking spot or stand in long a line.

Extra guac, queso dip, dessert, drive-thru windows… I'm so, so jealous. Again, road trip, anyone?

Just in case you haven't heard (or seen), spirulina is the new “it” superfood of Instagram. The blue-green algae, sometimes referred to as “pond scum,” has proven itself Insta-worthy partially for its many health benefits, but mainly because its pigmentation is super pretty and always changing, depending on what you pair it with.

From smoothie bowls to pastry icing, no one said you have to be a professional foodie to find creative ways to implement spirulina into your meals.

Browse through these gorgeous spirulina photos for a little eye candy and a lot of inspiration.

1. Stars And Strawberries

Pure Kaylie's smoothie bowl is blue and blissful, made with a banana nice cream base, decorated with spirulina, strawberries, and dragonfruit.

That's definitely one way to beat Monday blues.

2. Spirulina Breakfast Bowl

A recipe for Insta-stardom, Lina's identical bowls look good enough not to eat.

This breakfast bowl has a little bit of everything, from spirulina-spiked nice cream, to figs, and even dragon fruit.

3. Smoothie Bowl Made Better

Adding spirulina to your smoothie, bowled or bottled, instantly enhances its health benefits and pigmentation.

4. Breakfast Fully Loaded

My mouth actually watered at the sight of this overflowing spirulina smoothie layered with quinoa pops, dark chocolate, and fruit.

5. Light Blue With Lots Of Berries

Forget green smoothies — these days, it's all about that baby blue hue.

Topped with a medley of berries, this spirulina smoothie is simple, sweet, and so nutritious.

6. All The Green Goodies

I'm low-key obsessed with smoothies presented in mason jars, especially if the contents of said mason jar are spilling over the top (anyone else just have a mouthgasm?)

A dash or two of spirulina powder and a drop of chlorophyll makes this smoothie a green, mean, health machine.

7. Blue Lagoon In A Bowl

What are the chances Nadi & Hatt will invite me to Australia and make me this bowl for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?

The vegetarian couple created this decadent bowl of nice cream with all the sweet stuff like frozen bananas, coconut, and raw chocolate.

8. Dark And Fruity

Spirulina is magical because, depending on what you mix it with, the final product is always a different color.

Luci's vegan bowl is a brilliant, mossy hue derived from greens like frozen spinach, avocado, and cucumber, topped with all the noms like banana, cherries, and granola.

9. Green Nice Cream

Personally, I'm partial to green mint ice cream myself (white tastes different, trust me), so this bowl instantly caught my eye.

One bowl serves up a ton of health benefits, and I guarantee you won't be able to stop yourself from going for a third scoop.

10. Ocean Blue Bowl

Who wouldn't want to dive head-first into this gorgeously delicious bowl?

11. Pineapple Boat

Let's talk about Tiziano's genius for a second. Not only does he top his spirulina bowl with fruit, he spoons it out of one.

I'm not drooling, you are.

12. Pigments For Your Palette

I scream, you scream, we all scream for spirulina nice cream.

This masterpiece is practically flawless, and the gradual shift from white to blue to black makes this jar a seriously delectable work of art.

13. Incredible Icing

This couple's Instagram account is full of spirulina inspo, but my personal favorite is this sneaky trick to change up a favorite dessert.

The gorgeous blue icing pictured gets its coloring from spirulina powder, which means this treat is both delish and easily digestible!

Drooling yet?

Cookie Butter Oreos Might Be Coming Soon And We Can Already Taste The Sweetness

Whatever you're doing right now can 100 percent wait, because guess what? Cookie Butter Oreos might be coming soon to supermarket shelves near you, according to popular Instagram food blogger Markie Devo. The limited edition sandwich cookies, housed inside ultra tempting packaging, appear to feature a buttery filling in between two light brown cookies. I need to try them.

Junk Banter reports that these very real Oreos (remember when that fake mockup of the same flavor went viral in 2016?) will debut “sometime in September.”

In their post about the exciting junk food news, they attempted to decipher the blurry words on the low-resolution picture, writing,

If I squint my eyes to the limits of human capability, it appears they say ‘cinnamon' cookie with cookie butter flavored cream. It could also say ‘graham.' Doesn't matter, my eyes are blinded with excitement and lust.

In every sense of the word, same.

Oreo hasn't yet confirmed or denied the Cookie Butter flavor's existence, but if it does turn out to be a real-life product, you can bet Speculaas fans everywhere are going to fall in love.

Twitter is already mildly freaking out, because… COOKIE BUTTER OREOS.

Some People, Like Me, Were Like, “Omg Really?!”

Others Already Dip Their Oreos In Cookie Butter As It Is.

So this new addition will just elevate that familiar spice-filled flavor. (Also, what a genius idea, to be honest.)

It's URGENT:

August is just a few days away, which means it won't be too long before it's September. Then, we can (hopefully) tear open a delicious package of Cookie Butter Oreos.

While we wait for that moment of glory, let me remind you of another recently released Oreo flavor: Mocha. Made in partnership with Dunkin' Donuts, they're also limited edition and taste like your favorite morning bev.

Keep doing you, Oreo.

Amazing Chocolate-Stuffed Kit Kats Prove You Can Have Your Cake And Eat It Too

Everyone's inner Augustus Gloop delights at the thought of a piece of chocolate. Naturally, when news about an already chocolatey treat suggests even more chocolate is being added to the mix, Willy Wonka should just sound the alarms. A cake-stuffed Kit Kat has hit the shelves, and naturally, it's the perfect excuse to have your cake and eat it, too.

These glorious bad boys are every candy lover's dream — a chocolate exterior plus a soft and chewy piece of cake in the middle.

Say it with me, “Mmmm!”

The limited-edition Chocolatory Gateau Mignon Kit Kats have arrived on the heels of other exciting releases for the candy, such as the the sushi Kit Kats that offer you the best of the dessert and dinner combined. In my opinion, the combo is just odd enough to work. Why yes, I do fancy a Maguro sushi roll on white chocolate-covered puffed rice, thanks!

But back to the chocolate, because that's why you're here.

The Chocolatory Gateau Mignon Kit Kats are sold in threes and cost $13 per box. Though a bit pricer than the usual candy bar, it's obviously worth the splurge since you're being treated to cake as well.

However, before you reach for your wallet, keep in mind that the Chocolatory Gateau Mignon Kit Kats are a lot like the sushi Kit Kats… in that they're both available exclusively in Japan.

Patissier Yasumasa Takagi created the magic-in-your-mouth offering, and it's sadly only for sale at the Kit Kat Chocolatory store in Tokyo.

Do you ever feel like the best treats are created in Asia — the Blue Hawaii Frizz from McDonald's in Japan, the all-mermaid-everything cafe in Thailand? You're going to want to hop on Airbnb soon so you can find out how to take advantage of these items. It's a foodie's paradise!

For those who aren't in Japan, take comfort in the fact that Cookie Butter Oreos are possibly on the way and Sugarfina is offering tequila-infused chocolate for those looking for a 21+ treat. But Tokyo, if you're willing to send the Chocolatory Gateau Mignon Kit Kats, no one will complain!

Starbucks is keeping summer alive all year long thanks to its new fruity frappuccinos and refreshing teas. Though selections like the Piña Colada Tea Infusion and the beloved Violet Drink are welcomed on the permanent menu, sometimes tropical flavors just don't cut it. For those looking to find a new usual, behold: Starbucks' Pepper Nitro with a Jerky Twist, the latest offering to hit stores and give that “summer in a cup” mantra a run for its money.

Starbucks

If you're looking for a change from your typical morning berry blend, the Pepper Nitro offers a bold, powerful flavor with a twist thanks to its herbal spices, orange acidity, and of course, gourmet beef jerky. It's not often creamy coffee is topped off with an all natural beef skewer, but Starbucks is here to bring two fantastic worlds together. And you thought a croissant was exciting!

starbucks pepper nitro with a jerky twist a glass of light-colored coffee with foam and jerky on a stick on top it's an ombre-looking drink

Starbucks

As exciting an unexpected as this drink might be, there is a powerful story behind the beverage. Starbucks teamed up with farmers in the Congo, who are looking to make coffee their livelihood after years of conflict and devastation. The coffee company invested in the proper infrastructure to ensure that the coffee was grown in the most ethical and sustainable way possible. In a statement, Starbucks added that the “farmers and families behind this coffee are as special as the flavor it offers.”

Not only are you being treated to an unusual, one-of-a-kind flavor, but the Pepper Nitro also helps a community trying to improve its livelihood. It's totally a win-win, so what are you waiting for?

The new bev is slow steeped cold brew on draft through a nitro tap, so be warned before ordering — it's exclusive to the Seattle Reserve Roastery. The drink is combined with malted pepper syrup, cracked pink peppercorn, topped with a cold honey foam, and naturally, finished off with an all natural, gourmet beef jerky using grass fed beef.

Raegan Powell from Starbucks' R&D team helped create the new beverage. According to a release by Starbucks, she described the taste and said,

With the first sip, you get a hint of the honey cold foam and the aroma of the pink ground peppercorn. The real surprise is the salty savoriness of the jerky garnish, an exciting complement to the smooth and sweet finish of the nitro cold brew experience.

It's new, unusual, and probably going to be your new favorite order. Enjoy, coffee connoisseurs. It'll only be available for a limited time!

So, How Grossed Out Should You Actually Be When You Find Hair In Your Food?

$

Maybe it's because I live with a cat and I'm beyond used to discovering tufts of her fur literally everywhere by now, but finding hair in my food at, say, a restaurant doesn't gross me out like it does for most people. Would I rather my penne vodka be served sans strands? Of course, but the truth is, one strand of hair doesn't actually massacre an entire meal.

Personally, if I catch a hair in my spaghetti before shoveling the first forkful in my mouth, I'll normally just pluck that sucker off my plate and dig in — but that's just me.

But should you actually send back food if you happen to find hair in it?

This Restaurant Makes Food For Your Instagram Account [Mockumentary]

To preface, it's worth noting that the placement of hair in your food is rarely, if ever, done so on purpose. Restaurant employees normally have to abide by a dress code which will request long hair be pulled back in a ponytail or bun. So if you catch a strand (or two), it's probably accidental, and you shouldn't rage war against your server.

That being said, whether or not you decide to finish the meal or send it back is really up to you.

Dr. Partha Nandi, gastroenterologist and author of the upcoming book ASK DR. NANDI: 5 Steps to Becoming Your Own #HealthHero for Longevity tells Elite Daily, if you find a single hair in your food, there's “no harm in eating around it and/or removing it.”

In reality, the idea of hair intertwined in your food sounds worse than it actually is.

Dr. Nandi goes on to explain hair is actually indigestible, so if you swallow a piece by accident, it's not the end of the world.

In fact, you've most likely eaten human hair on a daily basis without ever realizing it.

L-cysteine is an amino acid found in human hair, poultry feathers, or synthesized in a lab, and it's often used as an additive in food (surprise!).

And, according to Mother Jones, processors tend to favor L-cysteine that comes from human hair, as it's twice as potent as that of alternative sources.

This may or may not make your food sound less appetizing, but at least you know it's more common than not to snack on a strand or two every now and then.

Plus, accidentally eating food that's come into contact with a piece of human hair won't have any medical side effects.

Lazy Girl's Guide To Eating Healthier

Maria Colavincenzo, a dermatologist at Northwestern University who specializes in hair, explained to Popular Science,

Hair is made of a densely packed protein called keratin, which is chemically inactive in hair and won't cause any problems if digested. It's possible that staph bacteria, which can upset the stomach and bring on a case of diarrhea, could hitch a ride on a strand. But it's very unlikely.

Colavincenzo went on to say the only time you should ever be even remotely concerned about hair in your food is if you somehow ingested a whole head's worth of strands.

So, unless you're ordering a literal plate of hair for dinner, you don't have to worry about keeling over and dying of strand-induced symptoms. Even the FDA hasn't deemed hair in your food a health hazard.

The next time you catch an unsolicited lock of hair hiding in your French fries, feel free to chillax and enjoy your food as your normally would, my friend.

Bon appétit!

New “Mermaid Songs” Seltzer Water Will Quench Your Thirst In A Mythical Way

Move over, LaCroix, because Polar is after our seltzer-loving hearts with their new mythical flavor selection. In addition to a now-back favorite, Unicorn Kisses, the seltzer brand has also released three equally magical flavors as part of their “Impossibly Good Polar Seltzer” project. The limited edition seltzers, which are in stores as of Tuesday, Aug. 1, include Mermaid Songs, Yeti Mischief, and Drago Whispers. Frankly, my mermaid soul can't wait to taste them.

The folks at Boston Magazine were lucky enough to put the 8-ounce cans to the test, and judging by their descriptions, Mermaid Songs might be an unfortunate letdown.

polar mermaid songs seltzer product image

Polar

They said, “It smells and tastes like a cross between Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish, and, depending on who you ask, there might be ‘some pine in there.'” Also, “Your tongue will probably feel weird afterward.” (Eek?)

Yeti Mischief, on the other hand, received a stamp of approval — probably because it smells and tastes like nostalgic red beverage Hawaiian Punch. As for Dragon Whispers, they said it's “just okay.”

If you were lucky enough to snag Unicorn Kisses when it was first released in 2016, then you're familiar with its candy-like flavor.

If not, I'd say… maybe try that one first?

Should you hate everything about the way these taste, there's one thing that saves them from being a total waste of money: their packaging. It's adorable and, like LaCroix cans, ready to be turned into works of legitimate art.

Regarding the limited edition release, Polar told Western Mass News, “The new Polar Seltzer JR assortment is made to chill consumers and leverage the unmet demand for sparkle and happiness.”

To summarize, Polar totally gets our undying quest for all things unicorn food. If you need me, I'll be stocking my fridge with, like, ten six-packs of the mythical mini cans.
